The project "Regeneration and Multiplication of Armenian Vegetable and Industrial Crops Accessions for Safety Duplication at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault" developed by the researchers of the Scientific Center won the grant competition announced by the Norwegian Agency for Cooperation Development (Norad).
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault safely stores 1,145,693 seed varieties from around the world, and it has the capacity to store millions more. the purpose of the repository located in Norway's Arctic Svalbard archipelago is to preserve the global genebank collections for the future food security of mankind.
The accessions to be regenerated within the frameworks of the project are of the Annex I crops of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) (eggplant, cabbage, beans, chickpea, mash bean) and non-Annex 1 crops (tomato, pepper, cucumber, pumpkin, vegetable marrow, melon, watermelon, summer squash, basil, lettuce, soybean, physalis).
