Promoting breeding of vegetable crops by diversifying breeding base, obtaining and digitizing data on genetic resources characterization and evaluation and providing access to them

The effectiveness of breeding largely depends on availability of a wide base of initial material and its exploration degree. The aim of the research project is to promote the development of breeding of vegetable crops by enriching and characterizing the genetic base of the initial material and providing access to genetic resources and related information. An integrated approach to enriching the breeding base by multiplying and introducing new species of vegetable crops into the culture and restoring the collection of underutilized vegetables will contribute to the diversification of agricultural production in the face of change of climate and agricultural production systems. A complex of field and laboratory studies on the characterization and evaluation of the genetic resources of vegetable crops will facilitate the search for source material in accordance with the breeding goals. The development of an open access information system for the vegetable crops collection will ensure the accessibility of genetic material for a wide range of users in accordance with the requirements of international conventions in the field of biodiversity, of which the Republic of Armenia is a member.
