“Regeneration and Multiplication of Armenian Vegetable and Industrial Crops Accessions for Safety Duplication at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault”

The Scientific Center of Vegetable and industrial Crops of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia was awarded a grant for the Regeneration of Crop Diversity and Safety Duplication at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault within the frames of the "Biodiversity for Opportunities, Livelihoods and Development (BOLD)" Project.

The purpose of the “Regeneration and Multiplication of Armenian Vegetable and Industrial Crops Accessions for Safety Duplication at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault” project is to safeguard valuable vegetable and industrial crops accessions of Armenian origin from loss due low germination rate or limited number of seeds available, as well as due to natural catastrophe, conflict or unpredictable technical failure. The accessions to be regenerated are of the Annex I crops of the ITPGRFA (eggplant, cabbage, beans, chickpea, mash bean) and non-Annex 1 crops (tomato, pepper, cucumber, pumpkin, vegetable marrow, melon, watermelon, summer squash, basil, lettuce, soybean, physalis).

The regeneration/multiplication activities were started in March 2022 and are implementing both in open field and greenhouse depending of crop species and variety.
